WebOne of the very first studies that investigated the abiotic stress signaling pathway with phosphoproteomics was an osmotic stress study in 2013 that explored the feasibility of a label-free quantitation approach using a library-assisted extracted ion chromatogram (LAXIC; see Table 1 for a description of this method) (Xue et al., 2013). Intracellular signal transduction is primarily mediated by the reversible phosphorylation of various signalling molecules by enzymes dubbed kinases. Kinases transfer phosphate groups from ATP to specific serine, threonine or tyrosine residues of target molecules. The resultant phosphorylated protein may have altered activity level, subcellular localization or tertiary structure.
